Below you will find easy to use instructions to self measure for your Van Aken custom tailored dress shirts. If you live in the metro Philadelphia, Washington D.C. or Manhattan areas, you may schedule an appointment for a Van Aken representative to come to your location to measure you.

Van Aken is able to accommodate almost any specific measuring requests. If you are looking to order custom shirts because you are unhappy with the way ready-made shirts fit a specific part of you body, please let us know. We can accommodate custom measuring requests of shirt length, seat, yoke, wrist (if you wear a watch on one arm and not the other) , forearm, bicep, and if right and left arms are different lengths.

In order to measure, you will need a measuring tape. If you do not have access to a measuring tape, you may use a piece of string and ruler (use the string to measure and hold up to the ruler for exact measurement numbers) or you can take this form to your local tailor and have them take your measurements.* If you take this form to your local tailor, please make sure they follow our instructions directly as each company has different measurement specifications. Mis-measuring may cause your custom shirt to fit improperly.

You will be taking your exact 'skin' measurements. This means that you will measure with the tape held taut against the skin without any slack in the tape. Van Aken technicians will provide allowances for fit and shrinkage.

Neck Measurement:
Place the tape inside the collar band. Measure the neck around the center, just below the Adam's Apple to the nearest ¼". Make sure that you do not have fingers underneath the measuring tape.
Chest Measurement:
Measure around the fullest part of the chest. Place the tape high under the arms and over the shoulder blades. Do not incorporate any ease into this measurement. Measure to the nearest inch.
Women:
  • You must give bra size in special measurements box
  • Provide two chest measurements: One directly above breast and one at the widest part of the chest
Waist Measurement (shirt waist, not belt line): Measure around the largest part of the stomach. (please note: DO NOT give the belt line measurement) Do not incorporate any ease in to this measurement and measure to the nearest inch.
Sleeve Measurement
Measure from the center point of the neck. Starting at the base of the collar, across the top of the shoulder, down the arm to the break of the wrist. Measure to the nearest ¼". If you prefer your sleeves longer than fit, please indicate under special measurements.

Shoulder
Place the tape 1/4" off the edge of the outer shoulder. Measure across the back with the tape placed just below the collar and continue to 1/4" off the edge of the opposite shoulder. Measure to the nearest quarter of an inch. Customer preference will vary greatly on the desired fit for the yoke. We will add 1/2" to this "skin measurement" for shrinkage.

Shirt Length
Measure from the front. Measure at the bottom of the collar band and down the center of the chest through stomach to your desired length (if you are not sure, standard length would be to the base of the pelvis at the groin area).
Shoulder Slope and Posture
Please circle the visual diagram that best matches your shoulder slope.
